Local SEO for law firms

Rank in the Google Maps pack, where local legal searches are decided. For anyone searching with local intent, the three-result map block sits above the organic listings and takes a large share of the clicks before a single blue link is seen.

Overview

The map pack runs on different rules

Ranking first organically and ranking first in Maps are separate problems. Organic rankings respond to content and links. The map pack responds to proximity, category relevance, review signals and the completeness of your Google Business Profile — and proximity in particular is something no amount of content can override.

This catches firms out constantly. A firm can hold the top organic position for a term and be invisible in the map pack directly above it, losing most of the traffic to three competitors with better profiles and more reviews.

Reviews do more work here than anywhere else in legal marketing. Volume, recency and the rate at which new ones arrive all feed local ranking, and they simultaneously decide whether someone picks you once they can see you. Most firms have no system for asking, which is usually the single biggest gap we find.

Local SEO for law firms — how The Law Connection builds case flow for law firms

What's included

What local SEO includes

Profile, reputation and local relevance, managed together rather than set up once and forgotten.

Google Business Profile optimization

Correct primary and secondary categories, complete service listings, attributes, hours, photos and regular posts. Category selection alone frequently changes which searches you appear for.

Review generation systems

An automated, compliant process for requesting reviews at the right moment in a matter, so review flow is steady rather than sporadic. Volume matters, but so does recency.

Review response management

Every review answered, positive and negative, in language that respects client confidentiality. Responding to a negative review about a legal matter carries obligations most templates ignore.

Citation building and NAP cleanup

Consistent name, address and phone across legal directories, bar listings and local aggregators. Conflicting records dilute the signals Google uses to trust your location.

Location pages

A substantive page for each office, with real local content rather than a template with the city name swapped in.

Map pack rank tracking

Grid-based tracking that shows where you rank across your service area, not just from one point. Local rankings vary street by street.

Process

How we approach local SEO

Profile and reviews first, because they move fastest.

STEP 01

Audit profile and competitors

We review your Google Business Profile against the firms currently occupying the map pack, and identify the gaps in categories, reviews, citations and proximity.

STEP 02

Optimize and clean up

Profile rebuilt properly, duplicate or incorrect listings resolved, and citations corrected across the directories that matter for legal.

STEP 03

Turn on review flow

A repeatable request process wired into how your matters close, so reviews arrive consistently rather than in occasional bursts.

STEP 04

Track, respond, expand

Grid tracking to see movement across the service area, ongoing review responses, and location pages added as coverage expands.

Detail

What decides map pack ranking

The signals that actually move local position for law firms.

Proximity

Distance from the searcher to your listed address. The single strongest factor, and the one you cannot optimize your way around.

Categories

Your primary category constrains which searches you are eligible for. Choosing 'law firm' over a specific practice category is a common and costly mistake.

Review volume and velocity

Total count matters, but a steady flow of recent reviews signals an active practice more strongly than a large batch from years ago.

Profile completeness

Services, attributes, hours, photos and posts. Sparse profiles rank below complete ones with otherwise similar signals.

Citation consistency

Matching name, address and phone across the web. Conflicting records make Google less confident about your location.

On-site local relevance

Location pages and local content that corroborate the geography your profile claims.

Questions

Local SEO FAQs

How do I get my law firm into the Google Maps pack?

By improving the signals Google uses for local ranking: a complete and correctly categorised Google Business Profile, a steady flow of recent reviews, consistent name, address and phone details across the web, and location-relevant content on your site. Proximity to the searcher also plays a large role, which is why results differ depending on where someone is standing when they search.

How many Google reviews does a law firm need?

There is no threshold number. What matters is how you compare to the firms currently ranking in your market, and whether reviews keep arriving. A firm with sixty reviews and none in the past year often ranks below a firm with thirty that receives two or three a month. We benchmark against your actual competitors rather than a generic target.

Can I rank in cities where I do not have an office?

It is difficult, because proximity is a major factor and Google Business Profile requires a genuine location. You can compete organically for city terms with substantive location pages, and that is worth doing, but expecting map pack placement in a city where you have no presence is unrealistic. Fake or virtual office listings violate Google's guidelines and risk removal of the profile.

What is NAP consistency and does it still matter?

NAP is your name, address and phone number as they appear across the web. Consistency still matters, though less than it did several years ago. The practical issue for law firms is usually old listings from previous office locations or former firm names, which create conflicting records that are worth cleaning up.

What should we do about a negative review of a legal matter?

Respond, but carefully. Confidentiality obligations restrict what a firm can say about a client matter publicly, and several state bars have disciplined attorneys for revealing too much while defending themselves. The safe pattern is a brief, professional response that acknowledges the feedback and moves the conversation offline, without addressing the specifics of the representation.
